The TL Leading for Learning

Even before entering the TL role this year, I knew the TL was a leader. They may not be formally recognised as one, but they lead from the middle.

ETL504 has had outstanding module content that emphasises the TL as a school-wide leader. In particular, module 4. This module details ways in which the TL leads for learning, in particular, in a 21st-century learning environment. It describes the TL as a person who encompasses various leadership styles to guide staff members through professional learning opportunities in regard to building future-focused learners.

When thinking of traditional TPL in primary schools, I usually think about literacy and numeracy. Though the TL is heavily involved in literacy, this module has opened my eyes to how the TL provides professional learning around general capabilities and skills. The TL focuses on a whole teaching approach, not just a particular curriculum area. For instance, leadership can be shown through the TL providing professional learning about ICT integration. While not aiming to meet a particular syllabus outcome, the integration of ICT aims to provide teachers with skills to enhance their teaching methods, and in turn, improve student outcomes.

A final point that stood out to me in module 4 was the idea of collaboration. This point stood out to me as this has been a major goal of mine this year. I have found myself collaborating with almost every single staff member in the school, whether that be senior leadership or support staff. I believe it is actually one of the best parts of the role, being able to be across the school and in collaborative partnerships with everyone.
