Infor-whaaat?

Never have I ever thought about information and information processing more in my life! It has been a great start to Module 2 – written clearly and easy to understand.

Throughout this module, I understand that information is more than just knowledge or facts. It is beyond just receiving a conveyed message. Module 2 has opened my eyes to understanding that information is firstly widely defined. The information hierarchy highlights the difference between just receiving information and what you do with that received information. Will I use that information for a specific purpose, or will it just form schema in the back of my mind?

Learning about the different types of knowledge was also useful. I think that I have an in-depth understanding of individual knowledge, connecting to my own schema. Still, I need to further look into societal knowledge and the information that whole societies value and uphold. Do certain societies value information more? Where do societies get their information from?

The most interesting part of the module and the section I had minimal understanding of beforehand was the four inherent properties of information. Reading that paragraph made me excited that the information gained won’t be lost – it is yours to keep forever, and you have the power to decide what to do with it!

Information behaviour is a new concept for me. My classroom teaching experience, especially with stage three, lets me see how the information economy is traded. Most children receive their information from the internet and are still learning how to filter through what is reliable and accurate, compared to personal opinion and advertising. I believe this is a big part of my role as a TL – showing children how to filter through all the information they receive and how to be critical and careful.
