Print Non Fiction Resources

This page contains links. To open them, right click on them and open them in a new tab so you don’t loose your place on the Jazz guide site. Below are links to some of the books on the shelves in the school library that you can use to identify some of the musical features and techniques of Jazz and some links that may provide you with more information.

Print Resources in the School Library:

Asirvatham, Sandy. The History of Jazz.

Asirvatham, Sandy. The History of The Blues.

Blackwood, Alan. Music of the World.

Some of these books contain links to website pages. The books are quite old (2003) so the links to sites may be dead. In many subjects you wouldn’t use a resource as old as these, but the information in them is still correct and relevant in terms of musical knowledge.

You might be able to go back and see the site using the “wayback machine”  There is also a link to this site on the school’s accessit library page.

When using the wayback machine you will need to think about whether the information on them is correct.

Usually you might verify it in a more authoritative resource like the books and reference works you can find on other pages on this site. If you find something on wayback machine, ask yourself, can I verify the information using the other sources?

How to find them:

To find these books you need to identify the non fiction section in the school library. If you walk through the main doors this is the section on the left.  You can ask a librarian for help if you need to at the desk. You will see the books are arranged using a system called the Dewey Decimal Classification System. You need to note the “classification” number from the catalog which you can get by clicking on the links to the school catalog on the resources above. Note it down and then go to the shelves. Find the numbers starting with 781 and then you will see it is together in a section with the other music books.

How to use them:

Non Fiction Print Books can help you to identify some of the features and techniques of Jazz. When using a book you do not need to read the whole book. Some of the books on this list contain information on your research topic but a lot of information you are not focusing on as well. A good place to start is to look through the index or glossary and separate the information on performers, styles or sub-genres, and what you are after, any features and techniques that might be mentioned. There are also recommended listening sections.

One benefit of books is you can usually rely on the information they are provide which is not the case with online resources. These books usually have been checked by publishers and librarians so they are suitable for use by students.

Referencing Print Non Fiction Resources.

You will need to make a reference entry in your Bibliography or reference list if you get information from these resources. When we are referencing we need to use a special format. The format that we will be using is called APA 7th Edition which follows the format for publishing by the American Psychological Association. You can use a referencing tool for this. Use your search engine to try to locate information about APA and how to reference a resource. You will also receive some help in class from your teacher.
