Using this guide:
You will be able to use different resources linked in this guide to identify what the musical features and techniques of Jazz are and how they relate to the musical elements you have learned about previously.
You will be to take the musical features and techniques you have identified, name them using musical terminology and locate and paraphrase information from a range of sources to create a description their meaning, features and characteristics in your own words.
If you need help understanding how to paraphrase, there is a video here that might help. You will then use the musical terminology for the feature or technique along with your description and your example to create a Glossary or list of the features and techniques of Jazz.
You will need to use a range of ways to find and check the information from online resources including your own asking yourself questions like: who is providing this information? can I rely on whether it is correct or not? how can I check?
You will need to search creatively by looking for key words relating to each technique or feature that you identify and searching for information relating to those as well to generate new searches.
You will be able to spell the different words or “musical terminology” correctly and using it in ways that show that you understand what it means.
You will create a list of resources you found your information in that will form your “list of references” or “Bibliography” that you will link to your information so you can let your reader or teacher know where you found your information.
Assessment:
You will need to keep a record of your research in your music exercise book including any information that you discover.
You need to include a search log in which you list any new searches you identified and importantly an identification or reference of where you have found it following your learning plan.
Your record or log of your searches, your glossary of your terms and your explanations of the techniques and features will be the items that are assessed. Your glossary should contain 10 features or techniques that you have identified as the main or most important features or techniques of Jazz. Remember to include how they relate to the musical elements. There is a reminder of the meaning of these in the Glossary.
You will need to create a Bibliography or reference list of the resources you use. You will need to use the APA or American Psychological Association Format. You will be taught how to do this in class.
A separate rubric that is part of this research task will be provided to you.
