The Role of the Teacher Librarian Revisited

Two months ago I wrote a post about what I thought the role of the teacher librarian was. It’s amazing how much my ideas have expanded in this short amount of time!

While doing research for an assignment I came across this video. It’s one I wish I could have seen years ago. The narrator states, “In a world of constant noise and shallow distraction, libraries are a refuge where children grow in wisdom. Librarians inspire creativity, critical thinking, empathy, and systems thinking” (Spencer, 2017, 1:22). I think had I seen this earlier I would have been using my own school librarian so much more! I hope during my time of study that I can expand the view of my colleagues to see the library as so much more than teaching release time.

My studies have opened my eyes to what our current librarian does and the richness of what my job will be.  I am excited to be a part of helping “our children become the kind of people we want them to be” (Spencer, 2017, 1:30)
