Module 1 was eye-opening to me in the importance of metadata in its creation, content, consistency, and accessibility. It was interesting to see the development over time of cataloging systems, particularly the massive impact of the internet. This was particularly well illustrated through the timeline on SCIS’s “About” page. I often use sites like goodreads to determine if I think students will enjoy a particular book before purchasing it. I have not previously thought about reviews and tags becoming like metadata created by users. I admired, throughout the module, how metadata specialists, archivists, and librarians have adapted to the challenges presented by the internet and other digital resources. The corporation across different academic fields and even countries is commendable. I wonder what impact virtual reality technology will have on cataloging systems as they continue to develop and where they might fit on the FRBR scale?
