It’s been a week since I finished reading Module 2, “Issues in Digital Citizenship.” There are several things that have particularly stuck in my memory this week, sparking further reflection.
It was mentioned in of the videos that a student was using Facebook to get help on her math homework; really understanding the maths for the first time. She was horrified at the idea that her teacher might find out because it might be considered cheating. I thought about how I have multiple Facebook groups set up where I can ask questions from others teaching or learning the same subjects and learn from their questions and answers. I started wondering how something like this could be set up for our students. I think a key is not having the teacher be a part of it so students can relax, ask questions and help each other but then how do you ensure that the site isn’t being abused by students (for example bullying) as you would be responsible if you set it up or even asked students to set it up themselves? I haven’t come to a conclusion but I would love to hear if anyone else has some thoughts.
Another thing I really appreciate from this module is the information on Creative Commons. I think I had a general understanding that CC meant I could use it without paying money, but I really didn’t understand that there were different levels of use and attribution. I found the explanations very helpful and I will be using some of the videos with my own students! I also appreciate that I now know how to add CC licensing to my own work and can teach students how to do it too.
I have never thought much about how I curate things before this module. I shared in the forums the few methods that I use, but it wasn’t until I started reading what others do that I realised how much is out there and how much more I do use then I realised. I wish I had thought about it sooner and started out more centrally organised. It is something I am excited to encourage my own children and students to think through as they are more at the start of their digital journey.
I really appreciate how this class is helping me to be more confident and more prepared in encouraging students to approach their use of technology with wisdom and knowledge.

I love the name of your blog! Reading your posts, it is evident that you are becoming more confident with the concepts and how you can put them into practice.
