I took a break from working on my “Rationale for Fiction” paper and visited Melbourne this weekend for the first time since the pandemic began. I met a friend and we visited the Linden Art Gallery’s Postcards exhibition (Linden New Art, 2020).
A work by the artist, Anna Hoyle (Holye, 2016), caught my eye. Her artworks were all created to look like book covers. They were a very clever commentary on today’s society. It reminded me of a time at university when we were discussing a definition of “art.” I remember one of the definitions we discussed was that art was “a reflection of society.” As I looked through art history I could see how this was true. It made me start thinking about the book cover designs today and what they say about our society now.
I wonder what future generations will see when they look back at our book art?
