Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish master of fairy tale. He broke tradition in how he told his stories, by using idioms. Majority of his tales ended unhappily, as a way to introduce new feelings to children who may not already understand them, while still being in touch with their perspective. The Little Mermaid and The Little Match Girl, were some of these tales. However other tales such as The Snow Queen and Princess and the Pea had much happier endings. (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2020)
