Welcome

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

“85% of Australians believe it is important to know about the histories of our First Peoples, but only 42% believe they have a high level of knowledge of that history”

This subject guide provides introductory information on the culture and history of Indigenous Australians. This ancient living culture is vast and diverse and this guide aims to provide a starting point with lots of links to great resources for all ages. This guide also aims to familiarise users with resources and organisations that can provide ongoing information and connection with Australia’s Indigenous culture.

Information provided on each source includes a suitable age range based on the complexity of the source and information. Many sources throughout the site are suitable for 12 years and up and a page Just For Kids contains sources better suited to children under 12 years old.

This LibGuide has been created in consultation and collaboration with local organisations: Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural and Education Centre and the Darug Custodian Aboriginal Corporation.
