The development of technology has influenced on society. In higher education, the increasing number of remote learners and expansion of online courses are the trend of educational development according to “The Educause Horizon Report 2020” (Educause, 2020). The advancement of technology changes the mode of learning. Learning is not only in form of face-to-face instruction but also online. Therefore, higher education institutions need to change their teaching strategies. For example, higher education institutions need to consider new models for online programs such as assessment (competency) and crediting (micro credentials and digital badging). Besides, faculty may need to prepare to teach in online, blended, and face-to-face modes in order to increase nontraditional student population.
Besides online education, there are six emerging technologies and practices which have a significant impact on the future of postsecondary teaching and learning according to “The Educause Horizon Report 2020” (Educause, 2020). These emerging technologies and practices can bring students better learning experience and achievements. For example, adaptive learning technologies provide students with personalized learning experience. Learning analytics tool can assess student learning outcomes and support student success. Despite the benefits of using these technologies, the use of these technologies involves controversial issues, especially data privacy and ethics. Therefore, higher education institutions need to carefully consider such as how to protect student data in implementing these technologies.
In addition, technology also influences on our daily lives. According to “Digital 2020 reports”, more than 4.5 billion people now use the Internet. The average internet user now spends 6 hours and 43 minutes online each day. They use the Internet through different devices, including using applications to play games, communicate with others, watch videos and shop (Kemp, S, 2020). Digital platforms make it easier than ever to connect with people. It has also changed people’s entertainment and consumption patterns.
The changing technology not only change our daily lives but also influences on business companies. Companies need to innovation continuously for survival and success. Therefore, it is important for companies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the innovation efforts. According to the article named “Right Tech, wrong time”, the key factors are prediction of technological changes and take corresponding actions (Adner & Kapoor, 2016). Managers need to look at ecosystem and understand the competition between the new and the old ecosystems so that they can make better prediction about the timing of transitions and make wiser decisions about allocation of organization resources.
