There are multiple different collections of images pertaining to “Old Tallangatta” (the original site of the town) and “New Tallangatta”. These mainly include photographs, paintings, cartographical maps, geological survey maps of gold, tin and gem stone mines of the towns. In addition, various artefacts are have also been photographed and they represent the lifestyle, tourism and events of the region.

Finding your own imagery:

1. The State Library of Victoria
The catalogue of the State Library of Victoria is an invaluable resource of images and other historical items. Many are available online. Once your click the link above, type “Tallangatta” into the search box (the big white box below the word “Search” and then select the category “Pictures & photographs” (click on the drop down box with the text “Everything except articles” as shown below):

To refine your search use the next dropbox called “Filters”. Enter specific dates or a date range (for example: 1945-1955) and article type (find on shelf or online):

2. Victorian Collections Website

This invaluable resource works in partnership with the Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria as well as Museums Victoria. The state government provides funding for the site as part of the Creative Victoria program. The purpose of the site is to provide historical societies and other community groups with a central location to store and share their collections in a digital capacity.
When “Tallangatta” is typed into the search engine, 159 diverse items are revealed. These stem from an array of historical groups, art societies, war history communities and items from Returned Services and other clubs. Some of the items are loosely attached to Tallangatta (for example: newspaper articles that mention Tallangatta) and others feature family history materials, photopgraphs/materials related to those born in Tallangatta and other more specific examples.
Many of the items contained historical information and are linked to other items.
The search can be refined on this site by using the term “Tallangatta, Victoria” and “Tallangatta Valley”. Also of interest for some readers will be searching exclusively for “Hume Dam”.

3. Trove: National Library of Australia
Trove, as in “treasure”, is quite literally the coming together of hundreds of libraries, museums, galleries, media group, government departments and community organisations to build an all-Australian collection. A collection that currently stands at more than 14 billion items.
The search engine allows the reader to select from an array of categories, including “Images, Maps and Artefacts” (see below). A simple search using the term “Tallangatta, Victoria” renders a result of 635 results. These can be refined by a side bar of collections including photographs, government documents, posters and art.

Maps are also included and these, and other items, are often linked to other collections or libraries. An example of this appears below, a draft map from 1949 of the new township for Tallangatta, which is stored in the State Library of Victoria.
