CEW Bean Prize for Military History

The Australian Army History Unit’s CEW Bean Prize for Military History is now open.

This prize is awarded to the best Honours, Masters and PhD theses submitted in any Australian university over the last three years.

This year, they will be accepting applications for theses submitted in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The 2025 Prize closes on Friday 2 May 2025.

We encourage you to circulate the attached brochure amongst interested fellow staff, students and your broader community, and encourage eligible honours and postgraduate students to apply.  We would appreciate you sharing this with students currently working on eligible theses so that they have the prize in mind for next year or beyond, once they submit and pass.

The application details, thesis, examiners’ reports, and all enquiries are to be submitted to aahu.conference@defence.gov.au.

What is a Three-minute thesis you ask?

The three-minute thesis, or 3MT, is an international competition for doctoral students to present their research and its significance to a non-expert audience in just three minutes, using just one PowerPoint slide.

It is held annually at over 900 universities across 85 countries, including here at Charles Sturt.

In 2025 3MT is back once again with our heats held fully online as part of our DocFest program (May 26th -30th).

It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work, build your communication skills, and connect with a broader community. We’re now calling for entries—don’t miss your chance to share your research story. Submit your entry today and be part of this inspiring competition! Read more

HDR Thesis / Creative Work of the Year:

Winner: Mitchell Cowan

Mitchell was based in the Gulbali Institute and his thesis is titled, Wildlife in mining landscapes: a case study of the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Mitchell was supported by his supervisors Prof Dale Nimmo, Dr Judy Dunlop and Aspro Jodi Price.

Seeing Like a Researcher is a masterclass series led by Professor Mark Evans. The Series highlights the experience, skills, wisdom and advice of Charles Sturt’s research leaders on themes relating to research innovation and professional skills for research.

We are excited to have Distinguished Professor Geoff Gurr join us for Session 7, Publish or Perish, Publish and Thrive.

Distinguished Professor Gurr is an internationally recognised ecologist who has held academic appointments at Melbourne, New England, Sydney and Charles Sturt as well as visiting professor positions at Sydney, Lincoln University (New Zealand) and Zhejiang University and Fujian Agriculture & Forestry University (China). His work over the last three decades has focused on harmonising agriculture with the natural environment. Read more
