Session Overview
Industry internships are rapidly becoming a cornerstone of impactful, real-world research. This session invites HDR supervisors, candidates, and academic staff to explore the evolving landscape of industry engaged PhDs.
We’ll hear from candidates who’ve completed internships and gain insights from Mark Ovens of APR Intern, who works closely with industry partners to facilitate these valuable experiences. Together, we’ll unpack:
- What are industry internships
- How they work
- What they offer HDR candidates
- Why they matter for research relevance and career readiness
Date: Thursday, 28 August

About Ian
Dr Ian Skinner commenced at Charles Sturt University as a senior lecturer in the physiotherapy department on the Port Macquarie Campus in January 2020. Ian previously taught at UTS in the Master of Physiotherapy program. Ian completed his undergraduate physiotherapy training at The University of Notre Dame Australia in Perth. He was awarded his PhD in March 2018 from the University of New South Wales. His PhD investigated the role of cognitive bias in people with chronic low back pain.
