Masterclass Series: Seeing like a Researcher – Professor Anna Walduck, ‘Organoids: using complex in vitro models to understand disease

Join us online on Wednesday, 2 July at 12:00-13:00 (AEST) for our  next session in the Masterclass Series: Seeing like a Researcher

In this session, Professor Anna Walduck will present her groundbreaking work in the development of advanced tissue culture methods. This Innovation in Research masterclass will explore the fascinating world of organoids—complex in vitro models that replicate the structure and function of real organs—and their wide-ranging applications.

Session Overview

The development of advanced tissue culture methods has made it possible to culture “organs in a dish” that are termed organoids. These models, self-assemble into 3- dimensional structures that closely resemble the characteristics of the original organs. Organoids are derived from stem cells present in adult animal or human tissues and have become indispensable for investigating questions including fundamental biology, cancer, infectious diseases and personal medicine.

This innovative masterclass will discuss different organoid model systems and their applications and illustrate how they can be used to address biological questions in new ways. Examples of microscopy and analytical techniques will also be discussed.

This is a valuable opportunity to:

  • Understand the potential and limitations of organoid systems in biomedical research
  • Explore the ethical considerations involved in developing and working with organoids
  • Gain practical insights into analytical methods and experimental design approaches for organoid-based studies

Don’t miss this fascinating look into one of the most exciting frontiers in modern biomedical science.

About the presenter

Professor Anna Walduck was awarded a PhD in vaccine delivery systems from the University of Queensland in 1995. Anna worked in veterinary vaccine R&D in the UK before returning to academia as a postdoc in malaria vaccine research at Queensland Institute for Medical Research in Brisbane. From 1999 to 2005, she was a Max-Planck Fellow at the MPI for Infection Biology in Berlin, Germany. In 2005, she returned to Australia and joined the University of Melbourne, and established her own group funded by NHMRC. Between 2012 and 2022, she held a teaching and research position at RMIT University. Anna joined the Rural Health Research Institute in December 2022 as Senior Principal Research Fellow, Global Health. Professor Walduck’s research interests range from fundamental questions on understanding host responses to chronic infection to applied approaches to the development and delivery of novel vaccines.
