Course Spotlight: Applied Statistical Procedures

with Dr Gordon Emmerson, Online: July 7-11

An intermediate level course that covers a range of the most used statistical procedures. It’s taught from an applied perspective, with questions encouraged. Using jamovi (R) or SPSS, no prior knowledge of either is required.

The target audience for this course ranges from qualitative researchers wanting to gain quantitative skills, to quantitative researchers wanting to broaden their understanding across procedures, or to become more comfortable with covariance prior to taking SEM.

Day 1
The context of quantitative research in relation to qualitative research. The language of quantitative research, and the required fundamentals of SPSS/ Jamovi.

Day 2
Reliability, Correlations, Controlling for Confounding Variables, Chi Squares, and T-Tests.

Day 3
ANOVAS, ANCOVAS, Factoral ANOVAS, MANOVAS and Non-Parametric Tests.

Day 4
Simple Regression, Multiple Regression, Discriminate Analysis and Factor Analysis.

Day 5
Testing Normality, Data Transformations, Validity, Reporting and Ethics.

Master-classes and Workshops

An Introduction to Mixed Methods Research Design: Online July 24-25 with Nicola McNeil
This Master Class will examine the key features of mixed methods research designs for participants with an introductory-level understanding of qualitative and quantitative research techniques

Nvivo Essentials: Online July 23-25 with Lyn Lavery
This workshop is aimed at providing researchers with essential skills in using NVivo software. Those choosing to enrol in this course will be working on or about to embark on a research project. The course assumes no prior skills with using NVivo, however will cater for all levels of participants, from novice to advanced users.

Collecting, Managing and Analysing Qualitative Interview Data: Online July 31- August 1 with Prof Carol Grbich
This course addresses the practicalities of collecting, managing and analysing data from Face to Face and Focus Group interviews, with an emphasis is on practical experience, gaining practice-based skills both in person and online and in gaining experience in analysing data.

Applied Qualitative Interviewing Methods: Online August 20 with Prof Catheryn Khoo
A one day hands-on advanced qualitative interviewing workshop where you will learn how to acquire high-quality, multi-dimensional data that can meaningfully impact evidence-informed decisions.

NVivo for a Literature Review: Online September 2-3 with Lyn Lavery
NVivo can be a powerful tool to help you conduct your literature review in an effective and efficient way. This master-class introduces NVivo, and takes researchers through the process of sorting and organise literature and notes from readings in a systematic way.

Machine Learning for Data Science: Supervised Learning Techniques: Online September 5,6 & 12 with Dr. Joanna Dipnall
An introduction to supervised machine learning techniques for data science, providing an interactive step-by-step guide to running some of the standard statistical regression and classification machine learning models that every data scientist should know.

Introduction to Deep Learning for Social Sciences: Online September 22-24 with Dr Maria Prokofieva
This masterclass is an introduction to deep learning applications in the social sciences. It offers a step-by-step guide to working with basic classification tasks, image recognition using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and natural language processing (NLP) with recurrent neural networks (RNNs). The course utilizes Python, TensorFlow, and Google Colab but does not require prior coding experience. These foundational tools provide practical experience in applying essential deep learning techniques to the social sciences domain.

Qualitative Research: Doing Constructionist Data Analysis: Online September 29 – October 2 with Prof David Silverman
A master-class offering early career researchers guidance on how to use the latest constructionist approaches which treat our data as instances of complex behaviours and hence complementary to quantitative research.

The Art of Survey Writing: Online October 6-7 with Dr Shaun Ratcliff
This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to develop the survey instruments needed for data-driven decision making and advice. The course will look at how large survey projects are run for political campaigns and academic studies.

Storytelling with Data Visualisation: Online October 13-15 with Dr Mark Griffin
This course aims to teach the design principles required to make plots that really have an impact on the reader, and the practical skills required to create these plots within the R software package.

Writing Qualitatively: Online October 23-24 with Lyn Lavery
A practical masterclass aimed at researchers with some qualitative writing experience who are looking to extend their knowledge and learn some practical tips for managing the process more efficiently. This workshop is suitable for researchers at any career stage who are actively engaged in qualitative research. It will be particularly helpful to those who have already done some qualitative writing and are looking for inspiration, feedback, and strategies to improve.

Discourse Analysis: Online October 27-28 with Prof Carol Grbich
This workshop is relevant to researchers from any discipline who already have a basic understanding of qualitative research and who would be interested in mastering both Foucauldian and Critical Discourse approaches.

Introduction to R: Online November 7, 8 & 14 with Dr Joanna Dipnall
A 3-day a step-by-step, interactive introduction to R and RStudio for participants with no experience with these software packages.
