The results I received from the Digital Online Learner Skills Framework indicated that I am an Intrepid Intermediate. This suggests that I am confident when it comes to managing my own personal learning environment and connecting with other people online. The framework presumes that I have formed many connections using various networking platforms such as LinkedIn, emails, Facebook and Skype, and every so often I participate in online discussions and forums, however would like to develop this further as I believe I am not entirely confident with this aspect of the internet. My confidence and ability to connect with other people and information synchronously and/or asynchronously is progressing and advancing the more I explore my personal learning environments.
For a previous assignment for Digital Literacy, I was required to create an online profile of myself using the platform LinkedIn. The purpose of the profile was to create a positive and professional online identity that would attract future employers and colleagues that are involved in the industry I see myself pursuing a career in, being nursing. I searched for other profiles to connect with individuals who are involved in the medical and nursing field, or, like me, are currently studying to pursue a career in this particular field. I also joined numerous groups and pages related to nursing and the general medical field that might expand my knowledge and online profile to assist me in connecting with likeminded individuals.
Developing online connections is critical as it allows people to establish and maintain various relationships, whether they be personal or work related. Having online connections means I have a number of methods of learning, this means rather than just relying on books and materials for my studies, I can learn from other students by discussing our differing point of views and understand something from an alternative perspective and participating in positive and constructive virtual debates and forums. Not only are online connections importance in regards to studying and working, but living in such a technologically focused world allows us to adapt and always be involved in the ever-growing hyper-connected world we live in, and to teach each other online etiquette and safety.
The current global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic has exhibited just how crucial online learning is. With schools and further educational facilities being closed in order to slow the spread of the virus by practicing social distancing, education organizations have had no choice but to transition all on campus learning to online. As an on campus student who has been out of school for 5 years, the thought of this was extremely daunting and I thought I was certain to fail and I was sure I needed face to face learning to be successful, however online learning is so advanced that it rarely feels any different than on campus learning. Students are given the same support, if not more in this difficult time given the circumstances, and we are still able to learn in real time with our lecturers and discuss any struggles we’re having with peers or teachers. This has proven to me just how advanced technology is these days and how important it is to have online connections in order to be a successful learner and feel supported throughout my studies.
I never thought I would be one to have a LinkedIn profile at 22 while studying, however going forward I intend to continue to use the platform as I believe it will provide opportunities and information that will assist me in successfully completing my studies and understanding the field which I indent to pursue a career in.
