Developmental Aids

At Gold Coast City Libraries, our Special Needs Library provides resources for children and adults with developmental needs.

To access these resources, new customers need to:

  1. Be referred by an allied health professional (such as speech therapist or Community Health Nurse) using this referral form.
  2. Make an appointment by calling 07 5667 5940 for the initial introduction.

After your introductory visit, you can use the library catalogue to request items and pick them up from your chosen Gold Coast City Library. You can borrow up to 10 items for up to four weeks at a time.

Quick tip: To find special needs resources on emotions in the library catalogue, type in ’emotions f:r’ in the search bar and press enter.

Below are selected resources for identifying, understanding, and managing emotions:

Temper Tamers In a Jar/ Published by Free Spirit Publishing

Description: 101 laminated cards in a plastic container with a lid.

Call number: no call number available.

This resource teaches you how to calm down, control your anger, and express your emotions in healthy ways. You can use the cards individually or in a group setting to imagine different scenarios, and learn calming down strategies. The cards are suitable for children age 8-11 years.

Webber photo cards: emotions/ Published by Super Duper Publications

Description: 264 photo emotion cards (102 red, 102 green, 60 purple), 4 mirrors for practicing facial expressions, and 4 instruction sheets.

Webber Photo Cards are a great resource for children who have trouble identifying, describing, and responding to their emotions and the emotions of others. The cards show one person expressing an emotion in front of a blue background to emphasize facial expressions and body gestures. The cards show people of different ethnicities and ages.

LEGO build me: emotions/ By LEGO Education.

Description: 183 pieces (8 emotion blocks, 175 blocks) with 8 large cards, 1 activity guide, and 1 contents sheet.

This LEGO set can be a fun way to recognize and understand emotions and imagine how to resolve conflicts in healthy ways. A parent or teacher can instruct you and explain emotions like anger. A great way to use this resource is to have open conversations about why you felt a certain way in specific situations, how your body felt, and what might you do next time to calm yourself.

Emotions and expressions ColorCards/ By Sioban Boyce.

Description: This pack includes 50 cards (48 emotion cards, 1 title card, and 1 emotion index card).

Call number: SNL CM:EM 5177

These photographic cards can be used individually or in group discussions to explain how to understand feelings and recognise emotions. They are especially helpful for children who have trouble reading facial expressions and have difficulty responding to emotions in themselves and other people.

Emotions and Expressions ColorCards 2/ By Sioban Boyce

Description: This pack includes 44 emotion cards, 1 CD ROM (Worksheet), and a guidebook.

A second resource in the ColorCards series, these cards can be used to continue practising understanding emotions and facial expressions. The manual explains different activities on how to use the cards as an educational tool to learn about different people’s emotions and how to respond to them.
