General Reference
General reference resources provide a general, broad overview of a variety of subjects. They are often designed to be consulted and referred to, rather than read word-for-word or beginning to end. You might consult a general reference resource to get ideas or to lead you to more detailed or specific resources. General reference resources include materials such as dictionaries, thesauruses, encyclopedias, atlases and databases. The general reference resources listed here can be helpful starting points for your Conflict and Representation unit.
Macquarie School Dictionary App
The Macquarie School Dictionary App is available for download and use on your own device through your school login. It allows you to search for over 60,000 words and phrases, and also allows you to enter a search using your voice if you do not know how a word is spelt. Many entries also include pictures to assist your understanding, as well as using the word in context in a variety of sentences. You can access the app directly on your school portal, or download directly to your device using the link on the library website. You can search easily on the home page of the app using either voice or type.
World Atlas
The World Atlas site can be freely accessed here – https://www.worldatlas.com/ It is an interactive atlas that allows you to click into various maps that cover the entire world, as well as providing social, political, historical and environmental information about various countries and regions. As you look at conflict in this unit, World Atlas is a helpful resource for locating physical sites of different conflicts and wars, as well as providing social and political information to help you understand the conflict and its causes. The site is easy to navigate using the drop-down page menu (see below) across the top of the page.
New World Encyclopedia
New World Encyclopedia – https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Info:Main_Page is a wiki, but provides more carefully organised and fact-checked information than Wikipedia, and can be reliably used as a source for school work. It is written and edited by academics and researchers. There is a simple search box located in the top right hand corner, or you can use tabs across the top of the home page to search by topic, or to search a full index of available articles. The full index is very time-consuming to search through, but can lead you to spot an article or idea you may not have considered or known about. The main search box relies on you having a clear search term ready to use. Searching using the ‘Category’ tab can be a helpful compromise. The category of ‘Political Science’ contains several entries that relate to the theme of ‘conflict’.
