Woollaston, V. (2020, August 10). Remember these? The most iconic computing print ads of all time. Pocket-lint. https://www.pocket-lint.com/laptops/news/148775-the-most-iconic-computer-adverts-of-all-time
This advertisement from 1983 for a computer grabs the readers attention with the phrase “Learning starts here” implying that this computer is an essential part of “learning”. This computer was “one of the first computers marketed at consumers and schools” according to the author of this article (Woollaston, Novemeber 2020) which might be the reason for the “vital learning tool” distinction. It shows the age of the advertisement as it only references the 3 R’s when using the computer to teach children.

In contrast, this advertisement was interesting to me as it showed parent and child together rather than just the computer itself like the previous image. The parent in this image also looks like maybe the child is teaching the adult which is an interesting shift of the power structure from 1980 to 2021. In this recent advertisement, more emphasis and advertisement space is given to the cost and financing of the computer which makes me think that a home computer for learning is valued as an essential part of 21st century learning. In a similar fashion, this advertisement’s tagline of “Give your child a great future with Dell PCs” implies that a child learning NEEDS this computer to be successful which plays on the heartstrings of parents. A difference between these two advertisements is the availability of this computer to purchase through a variety of methods. This is indicative of today’s modern world.
