Turnitin – Assignment checking instruction
Turnitin is a major tool in the University’s efforts to defeat plagiarism.
Assessment items that are submitted to the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies (CCES) are submitted to Turnitin, which is a program that conducts an electronic comparison of work to many millions of other assignments, web pages, journals, and other written work from around the world.
To assist course participants, the University offers you access to be able to ‘pre-check’ your assignments and the like, prior to submitting them to the University. That check allows you to see if there are any major referencing problems in your work, and to check the originality of your writing. You are urged to do a Turnitin pre-check for all your assignments.
To submit assignments to Turnitin for similarity checking you must first signup by following the instructions and links in Check my Assignment in Turnitin and enrolling in the school “Centre for Customs and Excise Studies”.
All assignments that are shown as being possible cases of plagiarism in the course are referred to the Faculty Academic Integrity Officer for thorough investigation.
Please do not be tempted to improperly use another person’s work in your assignments. It is a very embarrassing and expensive exercise to receive zero marks for an assignment, to fail subjects, or have other penalties applied, owing to academic misconduct.
Pre-Lodgement – Assignment Feedback
Welcome back to all students for the new session. The Academic Skills Unit’s popular Assignment Feedback service has been improved and expanded to cater for more students.
Charles Sturt University has partnered with education provider, Studiosity, to expand access to writing support services. It is free to all Charles Sturt students ( it comes as part of your enrolment so it makes total sense to use the service) and each student is entitled to 5 interactions per session.
All you need to do is submit your draft assignment to a writing expert at Studiosity (our partner service) who will give you feedback on your work before you submit it for marking.

EASTS (Assignment Submission) Instructions
n our courses, all assessment items are submitted electronically through EASTS. More information about the details of the EASTS program are located here.
Each subject Interact site has an EASTS portal to submit and retrieve assignments. I suggest that as you are granted access into subject interact sites, that you go into the EASTS area to check where and how you can submit your assignments. That is also a place where you can also see your assignment due dates, in addition to those formally being shown in the Subject Outline.
EASTS is used by all schools of Charles Sturt University, and as such there may be times where a considerable number of assignments are being submitted through EASTS across the University. Try to avoid ‘last minute’ submission of your assessment work by giving yourself plenty of time to submit and check your work prior to the due date.
It is strongly advised that you thoroughly check that your work has been submitted fully and correctly into EASTS on each occasion. EASTS offers you the ability to be able to immediately see on your screen the content of the file that has actually been submitted and then received by the university, so take advantage of that. Should you have concerns or problems with submission, you should contact your subject coordinator for advice and assistance.
Want to improve your academic writing?
Academic literacy is critical for most students’ success, and a simple proven approach to improve a student’s academic literacy is receiving timely formative feedback on their work. To support our students in this regard, the University partners with Studiosity to provide an online service that all students can access in Interact2 at any time day or night to get expert feedback on their writing quickly and easily.
Charles Sturt University students who have utilised this writing feedback service rate it very highly, and multiple studies show students who receive timely feedback on their writing are more confident, more likely to progress, and less likely to fail or drop out. The service also offers 1:1 on-demand help (via online chat) with written assignments and general study support and advice, again 24/7 to help your students when they get stuck in their studies after hours.

Referencing
The thought of academic referencing of your work might be quite foreign to some new participants of the course, but it is a necessity in your assessment items. You will find a wealth of information on the why and how of referencing here.
Those new to writing academically regularly struggle with trying to paraphrase material from a reference work, how to do it, and how to reference that in an assessment item. A clear and easy to understand explanation on how and what to do in those situations is here.
The style of referencing used in the University and in the School is the American Psychological Association style (APA).
The APA also have their own website which offers a lot of additional helpful material on referencing, including online tutorials, and that site can be found here.
If you are having difficulty with referencing, you should seek the assistance of your subject coordinator, who of course, is available to give advice and assist with referencing.
Academic Integrity at Charles Sturt
An updated version of the Academic Integrity Policy at Charles Sturt University came into effect on 1 July 2020.
Academic Integrity is a critical part of university study, and something we take seriously at Charles Sturt. It’s all about knowing how to complete your research, when to include references, and making sure you’re completing your own work.
We’ve developed a short subject called Academic Integrity at Charles Sturt University to help get you up to speed. It’s offered online and will take up to 2.5 hours to complete, including five short quizzes.
The subject covers:
- What is academic integrity?
- How do I show academic integrity in my preparation?
- How do I show academic integrity in my work?
- How can I feel more confident about academic integrity?
- How do I deal with more complex situations?
Academic Integrity is a mandatory subject for all Charles Sturt students. If you’ve completed the Academic Integrity subject since late February 2020, you will not need to complete it again. If you completed a previous version of the subject prior to late February 2020, you will need to complete the new version.
The new version will help you learn the importance of maintaining ethical standards in your academic and professional work. This subject is an important part of meeting Charles Sturt’s regulatory requirements and ensuring you understand your academic obligations.
Block out some time now to complete the subject and the five short quizzes at the end. Then you can tick this off your to-do list and be better prepared for the academic requirements of your course.
