The Importance of Being Ernest

Things new and unknown can often generate feelings of excitement and apprehension. Having a friend along for the journey always helps. This year sees me (Cath) starting on a new pathway in my teaching career. I’m stepping out of a single classroom and into the Library. As I see it, I’m now stepping into every classroom.

I consider myself fortunate to be working with the very talented, Mrs Alinda Sheerman, who is the Teacher Librarian at Broughton Anglican College. I am of the opinion that she is actually a wizard. Being mentored by her at this stage of my study is invaluable.

Also along for the ride is Ernest. He’s an emu. Ernest lives in the Broughton Library (IRC – Information Resource Centre) and enthusiastically involves himself in College life. Ernest is rapidly becoming a well known character within the College. He even has his own hashtag on Yammer.

One of the things that I have learnt very quickly is that having an Ernest really does help libraries demonstrate what and how much they actually do. Already this term Ernest has been to Spanish lessons with Year 1, set his own SMART goals with a Year 12 House Tutor class, lectured preservice Primary teachers on integrating Dance and Drama curriculum into the classroom, auditioned for the Junior School Musical, learnt to play chess in the IRC at recess, and been invited to the Year 12 formal at the end of the year. If you know a place that sells tuxedos to flightless birds…

He’s had such a busy few weeks (I know how he feels). I hope he feels better after his nap.

Good thing libraries are generally quiet.
