PIG-X is a multi-sensory predator deterrent system, with the focus being feral pigs. The device uses a combination of light, sound and scent deterrents to give pigs the perception of unusual activity, therefore scaring them away from turtle nest locations. The blue and white light emitted from the device is within the pig’s sight range of 439nm and 556nm and gives the appearance of people randomly patrolling the area. The random sounds will generally be produced in the ultrasonic ranges (pigs can hear up to 40.5kHz) and also represent activity that pigs will interpret as potential threats. The upper and lower frequency limits of the sounds can be adjusted to ensure that no other native animals in the area adversely disturbed. The scents released are unpleasant to the pigs and represent territorial markings left by other predators, and thus encouraging that they avoid these areas. Although the device is intended to deter pigs, it also has the potential to deter many other pests and predators.
