The following is a great video and I find Alain de Botton very funny.
What I took away
The video talks about the spirit of equality which from a design POV looks at empathy, user experience and identifying with the end-user or other person. He also talked about concepts of not judging people, this would go to not judging the person but the idea or design respectfully.
Any element of success has to have an element of loss. This was especially poignant at this time with someone close to me failing an assessment piece. In design, any success will have an element of loss whether due to budget or competing priorities of the end-user.
We should be the authors of our own success and what that looks like, this is because humans are highly suggestible people. It is worse to get what you want only to find out it’s not what you want than to not get what you want in the first place. We should become focused on what we actually want.
This was a great video.
