My Professional Development Philosophy

What is the meaning of life? This is one of humanities biggest questions. For me, personally, the answer is quite simple. You create your own meaning and have fun along the way.

I am currently year 3 in my 5 year and 10 year plan. As mentioned in my welcome page to this site, after backpacking for 2 years, I decided upon a career change. Choosing libraries as my career while I hone my craft as a writer.

My ‘dream’ job is a full-time author but I understand that being a full-time writer requires equal parts luck and skill to successfully support yourself. I decided that I needed a career to focus on that would be my stable job and keep writing as a hobby. That career is a librarian.

My 5 and 10 year plan in a nutshell.

  • 5 years
    • Attain diploma of Library and Information Services
    • Get full-time library technician role
    • Graduate from university – almost there
    • Finish 2 novels (half ✓)

  • 10 years
    • Publish a novel in 2026.
    • Get a Librarian role.
    • Finish writing 3 books.
    • Write full-time/part-time and/or work full-time/part-time as a librarian.
    • Reach HEW 7 or 8 work pay (preferably as a Digital or Outreach Librarian and then Senior Manager).

For me, my career, my purpose, my meaning of life is derived with what I do. I have something to look forward to in everyday because I have goals that I want to achieve and a world to see.  This is my professional development philosophy for not just my career but my life as well.
