- Use the sidebar to filter
In the instance of the Public Record Office of Victorias website, it would be a great idea to make sure to filter the results using the sidebar. This can mean instead of looking through thousands of results, once the parameters are there, it could mean tens or hundreds instead. See below images from the Public Record Office of Victoria’s website showing some of the filters you can use for your searching.
- Use a variety of name combinations and spellings
To ensure you are getting all the results you can, it’s worth trying a variety of first names and last names (maiden and married), different spellings just in case someone in the past made a mistake, and any other alternatives you can think of (Cullen, 2023).

- Make sure you track your journey
Citing, filing and backing up the information you collect can help you from having to start again if something happens. It can also be a good way to remember what you have read before, and a good way to go back to something you may want to view again (Editors of Family Tree Magazine, n.d.)
