ASU’s Library Minute and Use of Social Media

Whether every individual believes it or not it cannot be denied that the responsibility of the flow of information and connecting individuals to information has been a responsibility and chief purpose of libraries long before Web 2.0 technologies.  These technologies provide a way to continue the relevance of libraries as places and spaces for connecting users with the information and resources they require.

One way that Arizona State University Library has chosen to advocate their relevance is through the use of one minute video clips using the You Tube channel to create their own channel.  The benefits of these clips is that they are a terrific way to market their library as an information provider that is interested in their users and as such are keeping up-to-date with the current digital trends.  They promote their location, the services they offer and useful tips in mobile device use and security.  They are short enough to keep the user interested and have just information to pique a user’s curiosity.  It is interesting that the clips with the highest number of views are those where the user may need some information on how to use the library catalogue and how to contact a librarian which could infer that users still want to connect with information via library spaces.

Other forms of social networking that the library uses is that of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  These social media platforms assist the library in getting library news out quickly to their patrons and allows for regular updates about short term news and use of the library.  While the You Tube channel needs preparation, organisation and staff who are skilled in collaboration and creation of videos, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram allow for quick posting of news and events.  The user then has the choice as to which platform they feel the most at ease in using in order to connect with the library.

The other social networking technology that ASU Library uses is the use of a blog.  The advantage of the blog is that it is attached to the website and provides more detail than Facebook or Twitter whilst still providing regular updates of events and collection management details that may affect the users.  It is interesting to note that there is no comment feature on this blog to allow the user to share their voice.  Is the feedback only provided via Facebook and Twitter?

This library is definitely making connections with their learning community and recognises that the learning community extends beyond the locale of the physical campus and that some students or interested members may only have access online.  It addresses the need to be accessible at the convenience of the user.


What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is a term that was coined by O’Reilly (2005) to describe the transformation of the Internet from a one way form of digital communication to a two way form of communication (Monfared, Ajabi-Naeini & Parker, 2013).  Rather than the user passively receiving content, the user of Web 2.0 is an active participant in a community of users that can be from any part of the globe at any time of the day.

Web 2.0 offers a number of possibilities for education, such as connecting with a diverse number of peoples across the globe, the building of information from a basic beginning to deeper knowledge and the idea of building communities of like-minded people.  Other possibilities would seem to be the notion of audience.  People are now able to create and innovate to communicate their knowledge, thoughts and opinions and this could include student voices and work.  It provides opportunities for authentic learning about and with the tools of their generation.

Whilst there are many opportunities there are also some barriers to the use of Web 2.0 in education.  For example, fear.  Fear of the connections that may be made, cybersafety and cyberbullying issues.  Our students safety is paramount and we have a duty of care as educators, what happens when something goes wrong? Access is still an issue, as schools try to keep up with devices and introduce 1:1 iPad programmes, the infrastructure can still cause issues for connecting in some schools and  homes. Other barriers can be educators knowledge and understanding of  Web 2.0 and how to integrate these technologies into the classroom so that the needs of the students are being met.

Ah-Ha! Clarity – Social Media Assists Workflow

Kevin Kelly’s words challenged me when he said ‘we have to use things in order to find out how they work.”  I thought I had an understanding of social networking and a number of social media platforms as discussed in my previous post. I really considered in my professional world that I was limited in the way I could approach the use of social media with students, as they are only in primary school.  I have long had the belief and the students I teach will probably tell you that whatever we would view as acceptable in face to face interactions is equally the same with digital interactions.  I often say to my students citizenship is citizenship, it can just seem different and tricky when using a digital device.

I realised today that I have been ‘doubling up’ on the way I communicate and have made the decision that no longer will I be writing a separate Library Newsletter, emailing teachers about wonderful websites and learning opportunities.  I mean, the library website with the library blog is just as efficient and has the capabilities to reduce my workload, it’s all about harnessing the affordances of social media.  So here I share the link to our school library website and I will continue to share the journey of my learning about social media.  I am a firm believer in the idea that everything is a work in progress so welcome any comments or feedback you have.

I then had another attempt at Linked In as a social networking space.  I’ve sent out invitations and connected with people, accepted connections from patient friends and colleagues, added information to my profile and contributed my first post promoting the library website.  That wasn’t my big moment of clarity and I almost feel embarrassed to share this but the feature I loved was that I could ‘tweet’ my post from within Linked In!  Am thinking Linked In definitely has a place in my toolbox of social media.

Social networking initially is understood to be a network of people who join together and interact with each other to share personally or professionally.  It is therefore as successful as those who join the community or network of people who have chosen to participate.  Social networking has always existed throughout history but since the inception of Web 2.0 the opportunities and possibility to connect with a much wider global community has meant the ability to expand ideas and thoughts.  Many more voices provides much more depth to the dialogue.

Social networking allows individuals or groups to develop connection and increase learning based on their interests and passions.  There are so many social networking sites that individual preference, passion and purpose determines which social networking sites are used by the individual (Ishizuka, 2010).  Social networking allows people to continue along their quest for knowledge and the importance of concepts such as lifelong learning are another of the benefits of this participatory, collaborative connection between people.  It highlights the need for individuals to develop knowledge and skills about recognising fact from fiction, developing their boundaries through critical thinking before contributing or sharing too much.  Social networking requires people to be able to bring the digital and the face to face into a one world view rather than a belief that is what happens online is different to what happens offline.  The question is, how private? how public? how much is too much? in this ever accessible network of people.  Is it really healthy to be connected to the technologies being offered by Web 2.0?

I have used various social network sites but my purpose and experience is quite different for each one.  Facebook, Instagram are by far my personal playground.  They are where I share anecdotes with family and friends as we live quite some distance from each other.  Twitter is where I find useful professional information with links to educational specialists and gurus from around the world and I tried to use Linked In for a while but found it not as effective as Twitter.  I have a Pinterest account to curate resources that could be useful for that rainy day, or meals to make for my family.  I have a You Tube account, a Google + account and these are new areas for me.  Anything that involves me sharing actual footage of myself I tend to not contribute but appreciate and comment on the efforts of others.

Throughout this unit though I hope to learn how to utilise the benefits of social networking in a primary (K – 6) educational setting.  What is it that needs to be considered?  How can the vision of a primary school library use social networking platforms to serve the needs of the learning community?

INF536 Literature Critique

The NMC Horizon Report K-12 2015, identifies that education has its own set of problems that need to be addressed at some level over the coming years.  It recognises that there are problems that can be easily solved because they are known and understood.  There are those problems that are more difficult to solve as they are known but the solutions are not as obvious and then there are those wicked problems that are extremely complex in nature.  Each of these categories impact policy, leadership and practice.  The Horizon Report by its very nature is a document that promotes the need for design thinking in an attempt to redesign education. The NMC Horizon Report Library Edition 2015 identifies that one area that needs to undergo a rethink is that of the library space (p. 10). It suggests that libraries are now evolving from spaces for developing information spaces to include innovative spaces such as makerspaces and media production spaces. While the focus of this edition is mainly academic and research libraries there are elements of this document that can and should be considered by school libraries. Design thinking is now being recognized as a way of transforming and innovating education.

This essay will critique 6 articles to synthesise and highlight the tensions and challenges that still exist in education adopting design and design thinking. It will discuss the idea that physical and digital space needs to be redesigned in order for schools to remain relevant and engaging spaces for learning. In order to show synthesis of the ideas from the 6 articles below, this essay will discuss inquiry-learning as one pedagogy that requires consideration of learning spaces within the school, especially in the library and how this learning space needs to connect to classroom spaces to evolve our schools from the ‘classroom-as-container’ mentality.

From the articles listed above, it is acknowledged that there is no one agreed upon definition of design and design thinking. This can make it challenging for those who consider themselves beginners in design thinking. Kuratko, Goldsworthy & Hornsby (2012) recognizes design as a process that involves the conversion of ideas into some observable form or artifact. Design can be “a plan of action or a physical thing” (p. 103) or it “could be a product, service, process or business model” (p. 104). Brown and Katz (2011) would seem to concur with this idea of design as being about the creation of products as they see design thinking as the ability to “translate observations into insights and insights into the products and services that will improve lives” (p.332). The strength with these definitions is that they acknowledge society has moved beyond the idea of product as architecture, interior decorating and those industries such as education can and should use design thinking to design the service of learning they provide. The weakness of these definitions lies in the fact that they are more focused on the end rather than the process, the how to arrive at a solution that leads to the designed service or product.

Razzouk and Shute (2012) provide the definition that design and design thinking is an “analytic and creative process” (p.330) that “[generates] solutions for problems” (p. 331) and therefore they identify design and design thinking as being more about solving problems. Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby (2012) acknowledge that creative thinking is required and that by using divergent thinking the product will be “better designed” (p.105) and this “leads to more innovation” (p.105). It is interesting to note innovation is introduced by Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby (2012) after the artifact has been delivered and embraced to a larger audience. The use of the term innovation rather than product could be considered more advantageous as innovation suggests the idea of something that is firstly different and then measured as better (McGrath, 2015, p. 54). With the importance placed on the need for artifacts to be introduced to a wider audience before being considered as innovation, Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby (2012), suggest that design thinking is measurable as the impact of the innovation determines its success or effectiveness.

Seidel and Fixson (2013) offer the concept of design as “the application of design methods” to various problems or challenges that require different thinking. These methods are the formal methods of “need finding, brainstorming and prototyping” (p.19) and it is through these formal methods that innovation is promoted. Again, it can be understood by Seidel and Fixson (2013) that design thinking is the strategies employed to reach that place of innovation.

IDEO’s Design Thinking for Educators Toolkit (2012) defines design thinking as a combination of process and problem solving for “transforming difficult challenges into opportunities for design” (p. 11).  The other elements that provide strength to IDEO’s definition is that design thinking are an “intentional process” and a “mindset” (IDEO, 2012, p. 11). John Hockenberry (2012), discusses this idea of intent in his Ted talk ,where he describes intent as being what you want to show the world. In education then, what is it that schools intend to show about what is happening in their environment? Obviously, it needs to be learning but what about pedagogy and the culture of the school? Even though each school represents education, the culture of learning can be different.

One of the differences that exist between the six articles is who designs? All of the articles identify that design and design thinking is no longer limited to architects and engineers and that anyone can be a designer. In fact, Brown & Katz (2011), identify that it is a “natural evolution from design to design thinking” and that it’s “too important to be left to designers” (p. 381).  Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby (2012) appear to aim their article towards a business setting by providing the example of Apple. They specifically state that anyone can become a designer if they have “an idea and then tweak and transform it into a desirable or needed form” (p. 104). Initially, this seems empowering to the reader who is new to the ideology of design thinking but on reflection one could ask the question, is there ever a time when an idea cannot lead to a “desirable or needed form?” (Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby, 2012, p. 104).

Razzouk & Shute (2012) do relate design thinking to education but throughout their article it seems to recognise design thinking as an individual activity as can be evidenced when describing design engaging “a person in opportunities to experiment, create and prototype, model, gather feedback and redesign” (p. 330). Another weakness that could be identified is that in their discussion of design thinking as belonging in educational contexts, they focus on student-centred design thinking. If education is to be transformed then it needs to be a collaborative process that includes the whole school community. This collaborative process is evidenced in the design brief Dear Architect – a Vision of Our Future School. The title of this article offers something that the other articles do not, that being the word vision. This article is strengthened by the fact that it can be seen that it has been collaboratively worked upon to provide the brief of what the learning space at Walker College needed to be in order to be effective for the whole college community.

Seidel & Fixson (2013), offer research into the effectiveness of “novice multidisciplinary teams” which highlighted the idea that design thinking is a learned process when the formal methods of need finding, brainstorming and prototyping were employed in a collaborative setting.  It is strategic to include as many voices as possible as this harnesses support and commitment for the need for change and to not keep doing something as it has always been done (Best & Inholland University of Applied Sciences, 2011). IDEO (2012) offers a practicality to educational settings and do provide ideas for the novice design thinker, even though educators have been designing their physical spaces to meet their individual contexts. They identify five phases to their design process – discovery, interpretation, ideation, experimentation and evolution (p. 14). Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby (2012) identify three phases – play, display and watch the replay (pp. 117 – 120).  It can be seen again then that there is no one definite process, the important theme to recognise here is that design thinking is a process. Another key element to success is time and experience. This can be validated in Razzouk & Shute (2012) who identify that the more experience and challenges faced is the major determining factor in recognizing expertise over novice designers. IDEO (2012) clearly state that design thinking is “collaborative,” “optimistic” and “experimental” (p. 11)

Empathy for the user is a major theme that can be found in the literature. Seidel & Fixson (2013) identify this understanding the context of the user as central to the formal method of needfinding to generate the concepts / problems to be solved. Brown & Katz (2011) describe the need of going out and observing, actually immersing oneself in the context where transformation needs to occur. The belief that they have regarding this idea of empathy is powerful when they state, “[f]or a design thinker, it has to be ‘us-with-them” (p.382). IDEO (2012) also identify that this idea of empathy and focusing on the user is what contributes to developing a design thinking mindset. In effect it is empathic design that encourages success when designers “put themselves into the shoes or situation of their users so as to better understand users’ needs” (Perrault & Levesque, 2012, p. 16).


How does design thinking transfer into the reality of designing a school library setting?


The Australian Curriculum and the Board of Studies Teaching and Education Standards NSW Syllabuses, shows the need for teacher librarians, teachers and administration to redesign pedagogies for effective learning to take place, as technologies, creativity and critical thinking skills and inquiry learning are embedded alongside the various content. Learning spaces are recognised as formal and informal and teachers are being encouraged to rethink their idea of learning space from a ‘classroom – as- container’ mentality (Leander, Phillips & Taylor, 2010, p. 329).  This metaphor can equally apply to school libraries. School libraries and teacher librarians need to consider their “imagined geography” and design their containers to meet the needs of the learning community (Leander, Phillips & Taylor, 2010, p.331). Now more than ever design and design thinking are being viewed as necessary in this time of change in education.

The pedagogy of inquiry learning has and continues to be used in school libraries by teacher librarians but after reading the above articles, the question can be asked, how does the role of design of space impact the success of such pedagogy? Guided inquiry is designed from the research of Carol Kuhlthau and was initially known as the Information Search Process (Kuhlthau, Maniotes & Caspari, 2007). Kuhlthau’s research highlighted the process that students utilised in being able to move from initiating a topic to gaining a deep understanding of the content as it was student-centred with opportunity for feedback throughout the process and is significant as it includes thoughts, feelings and actions.  Inquiry learning aligns itself with a constructivist theory of learning. It is active learning.

In their book, Guided Inquiry Design – A Framework for Inquiry in Your School, Kuhlthau, Maniotes and Caspari (2012) have used design thinking and research to create a process that will help schools break the ‘classroom-as-container.’ They identify eight phases – Open, Immerse, Explore, Identify, Gather, Create, Share and Evaluate. Throughout each of these phases there is a need to consider the physical and digital spaces of the school library. As identified in the literature above, forming teams is important to design thinking but it is also important to Guided inquiry (Kuhlthau, Maniotes & Caspari, 2012; Stubeck, 2015). Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby (2012) also identify that throughout a design thinking process there needs to be a “proactive champion”(p. 105) and using Guided Inquiry the teacher librarian has the opportunity to be this leader. To blur the walls between the library, classrooms and real world other core members of the team to drive this learning is class teachers. Class teachers are the experts in the direction they envision the content to take and the students in their care. Teacher librarians offer expertise in digital literacies, inquiry learning and resources (Kuhlthau, Maniotes & Caspari, 2012).

The reality for designing learning spaces in the primary school library is that the intent for learning is both formal and informal and that a school library supports the learning needs of the students but that of the teachers designing the learning programs and the parents who need support in these changing times of education (Stubeck, 2015). The way that the school library can be used and the users who utilise the space can vary daily (Turner, 2014). In primary school libraries students come in to have formal lessons and then at break times, before and after school the library is open for students to catch up with friends, take advantage of technologies if they do not have access from home or just enjoy some quiet time for reading. Teachers can also use the space for planning time to search for the resources needed, meet with grade partners, staff or subject committee meetings. It is interesting to add though that usually there is no time to collaborate between the teacher librarian and teachers because of timetabling issues (Stubeck, 2015).

Considering these factors then a library that supports its users needs to consider the physical space for flexibility (Sullivan, 2011; McGrath, 2015). Furniture that can be easily moved and arranged would provide such flexibility. Shelving and tables that are on wheels and can be rearranged also provides   Areas where the whole class can gather if explicit teaching needs to be given, areas where small groups can gather and brainstorm, provide feedback to each other and areas where students can break away from the larger group to complete learning tasks independently with a clear focus (Grigsby, 2015). Thornburg (2013), in his book, From Campfire to the Holodeck: Creating Engaging and Powerful 21st Century Learning Environments, he describes the need for spaces he describes as campfires, watering holes and caves. Thornburg (2013) identifies these spaces as not only necessary for learning but for students to be able to find flow, or engagement in their learning. Through such flexibility the school library then becomes a place that “embraces innovation, [encourages users to] think outside the box, engage in interdisciplinary and community collaboration, embrace sudden learning opportunities and address real world problems” (McGrath, 2015). By having this flexibility then the library is supporting and promoting not only active learning but authentic learning that is core to Guided Inquiry.

Part of the Guided Inquiry design is the Open and Immersion phases where students are invited to be curious and immerse themselves in information and resources available to help them gain some background knowledge into the topic. The implication here is that teacher librarians need to consider when designing the library space elements such as signage; lighting; accessibility to chargers for iPads; accessibility to digital resources via websites; pathfinders and wikis (Sullivan, 2011). If immersion in information sources is part of assisting students driving their learning and teachers facilitating, then the physical design needs to be considered. It can be seen then that teacher librarians can be leaders through their proactivity in embedding the library in learning not just in physical space but digital space (Grigsby, 2015).

Another issue in designing the library space to align with the requirements of Guided Inquiry is to go through the collection of resources and ensure that the information the students are being exposed to is current and relevant. If it is out of date, politically incorrect or offensive in its use of images or language to portray certain cultures, then weed the collection (Grigsby, 2015). School libraries are not effective when they become warehouses for the storage of printed materials and technologies that are obsolete (Grigsby, 2015; Sullivan, 2011).

Throughout all the phases of Guided Inquiry there needs to be space to display their learning. Display of learning could and should include professionally printed posters; books; photo collages; 3d artifacts but could and should include posters showing the phases of Guided Inquiry; anchor charts; identified questions for further research; digital presentations on interactive whiteboards; 3d models (created using 3D printer) or recycled materials that are created to show the creative and busy efforts of students and teachers. These displays promote learning, thinking and an avenue for collaborative feedback not just to a specific class but to and from all users of the learning community. These displays then make the design of the library a fluid, engaging and welcoming learning space that celebrate learning and embed school libraries at the heart of the school (Sullivan, 2011).

Design thinking is a mindset that encourages growth as it promotes thinking beyond what has always been done before in any industry. It is constantly iterative in that when an innovation is made, there will be the need to keep evaluating, observing and innovate some more so that the product or service is working to make the world better place. Design thinking is product or service, process and problem-solving (Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby, 2012; Razzouk & Shute, 2012; IDEO, 2012; Seidel & Fixson, 2013). It involves empathy for the users of the product or service and encourages collaboration so that solutions and innovation is reached not for the user but with the user (Perrault & Levesque, 2012; Seidel & Fixson, 2012).

Design thinking is being embraced by schools and school libraries not only in the design of learning tasks but also in designing learning spaces to allow effective and authentic learning to take place. Deed, Lesko & Lovejoy (2014) state that “[a]rchitecture can create an impression, or be symbolic, of the type of learning environment likely to be experienced” (p.370). The questions that individual schools need to ask then are what is our vision? What is it we want to show the world as our representation for learning? How can we develop the skills needed to be effective at designing the learning and learning spaces our learning community needs? It is the responsibility of each individual school to consider their context and their users so that they remain relevant and engaging spaces for learning (IDEO, 2012). Design thinking provides opportunities to model to students how they can contribute to the solutions for the challenges that they face and will continue to face throughout their life.

At the beginning of this subject, I need to be honest and note that my understanding of Designing Spaces for Learning was more focused on the layout of the furniture and I thought, considering this Masters is called Knowledge Networks and Digital Innovations, maybe it was going to demonstrate the layout of various digital learning platforms.  How wrong could I be?

I had deemed my efforts in putting the furniture together in a workable configuration as a success and had used a basic understanding of Thornburg’s article (2007) to have a space for explicit teaching – campfire, spaces for collaboration – round tables for the watering hole and breakaway spaces for caves.  My understanding now is that the learning environment is the third teacher, in that it connects the learner to the curriculum, the curriculum to the learner and the learner to the learner (Hughes, Bland, Willis & Burns, 2015).  I had gained an understanding of the challenges in setting up the library space to accommodate the multiple users with their multiple purposes but I had in fact designed the library “to serve the furniture, not the students” (Graboyes, 2011) and their learning.

My understanding grew as I read the various design theories.  It was the exercise of spending half an hour at my local coffee shop, however, that brought the concepts of this literature to some understanding.  The ideas of “need finding”, “immersion” and “putting people first” (Brown & Katz, 2011, p.382)  as a way of developing empathy for the users (customers and staff) provided me with understanding because I was detached but engaged in the space.  I was not invested in this space and all I did was make observations.  The ah-ha moment happened and I began to change my thinking that while I was saying my pedagogy was one of collaboration, active, inquiry-driven learning using the affordances of the technologies available, the space I was the leader of was not reflecting this.

As Deed, Lesko & Lovejoy (2014) state, “architecture can create an impression or be symbolic of the type of learning environment likely to be experienced” (p. 370).  I had taken control of this learning space and when the students walked in they became aware of a teacher-directed learning environment.  It was set up and established what went where.  The infrastructure determined where they could work on their devices.  I also realised that while promoting the library as informal learning space and formal learning space, it seemed I was much more comfortable involving the student voices in designing their informal learning opportunities as evidenced by the first  reflection of my learning in this subject.

This subject has definitely furthered my understanding of space as an important element for learning.  It is not just an incidental happening but a conscious and purposeful decision that needs to be made.  Schools are losing their appeal as learning spaces as I identified last session so it is important now that a reimagining of learning spaces occurs.  To reimagine our learning spaces to be spaces of innovation though, we need to collaborate (Sanders, 2008; Willis, 2014; Hughes et al., 2015), empathise (Brown & Katz, 2011; Seidel & Fixson, 2013; Perrault & Levesque, 2012)  and constantly monitor (Graboyes, 2011; Wilson & Randall, 2012; Kuratko, Goldsworthy & Hornsby, 2012))  so that we can keep these spaces as relevant.  The learning space needs to be flexible, agile and responsive ( Hughes et al., 2015; Sullivan, 2011; Harland, 2011)at all times to the context of the learning and the learners needs.

After all the literature read, the discussions undertaken and the reflection, the final word for learning spaces is that they are never final.  Now, it’s time to apply what has been learned and to continue to learn as I “play, display and watch the replay” (Kuratko, Goldsworthy and Hornsby, 2012, pp, 116 – 119).

Coffee Shop Design Observations

Brown (2009) states that design is not limited to designers and one can infer that he is speaking of designers by degree or qualification.  Many times I have watched TV shows such as The Block, Grand Designs and more recently Restaurant Revolution.  These shows are the stuff that dreams are made of and full of innovative concepts and little did I realise till today, examples of design thinking as not only the final product but the processes and journey it takes to bring these concepts to final form.

What about the local coffee shop I go to though?  Had I really taken much notice of the design?  Not really.  It is a local coffee shop attached to a large shopping centre and I go there because the staff are friendly and basically it is easy for me to pop in and out quickly.  I actually never take the time to sit and observe how the design of this coffee shop operates so to sit for 30 minutes inside was a novelty not only for me but for the staff as well.

Here is an overall sketch of the physical layout of the coffee shop.



The coffee shop is located right at one of the main entrances to the shopping centre.  It is always busy and the entryway can become crowded when there are people waiting for coffee, people waiting to pay and people needing to get through to sit in the coffee shop.


The ‘work area is partitioned by a wall which has a pass cut-out into the wall where the food is passed through from the kitchen.  Dirty plates and dishes are taken via a small single door to the kitchen and the final preparation for plates of food, such as adding cream and ice-cream are done in the coffee area or the bench space near the door to the kitchen.

The seating is very squashed together and little did I realise there were not many younger people or families using this coffee shop.  The clientele seemed to be retirees or groups of adults of no more than 3.  The tables in the centre had a space between of between 20-30 cm from the corner of one table to another and staff needed to pass food across the table to get to the people sitting in the centre.


While waiting for food and coffee, there was little to look at if facing towards the entrance of the shopping centre.  Selling drinks and food were definitely on the agenda of the owners as when facing towards the shop and shopping centre entrance the customer could see a drinks fridge, the preparation of food through the pass and the several glass jars that cluttered the bench surrounding the coffee machine that were full of cakes and biscuits.  As well there were some flowers in a vase.

An interesting observation is that two customers required walking aids and 1 customer had parked hers right in front of the cake fridge next to where she was seated and the other had to park hers outside the shop where trolleys also need to be put if using the coffee shop.

It was difficult to observe without judgement but it became apparent that I now knew why I prefer to get takeaway coffee rather than use the coffee shop.  The advantage this business has is that it is located in a prime position within the centre and the staff are always happy and friendly towards their customers.  While food and staff are central to customer experience in a coffee shop so too are the surroundings.

Design for Informal Learning to Satisfy Lunchtime Library User Blog Post 1

School libraries are many spaces within one larger space and how space is used depends on the need of the user at a particular time of the day.  For example, they can be meeting spaces for teachers and parents before and after school.  They can be formal learning spaces giving lessons in how to navigate a plethora of information sources and how to present final products of information based on research.  They can be spaces to escape the busyness of playground activities to undertake activities that use and develop creativity, reading skills and imagination.

The task is to find a ‘problem space’ that is not serving the purpose it could do, for learning.  The space I chose is the entryway as I needed a space for an informal learning activity that has been directed by the students themselves.  Since the release of the movie Paper Planes on DVD, many of our students are coming to the library to make and experiment with different designs of paper planes.  Initially, they were flying them everywhere in the library and as there is a lot of informal learning going on with their new found interest, we needed to find a space that encouraged rather than discouraged them and met these informal learning needs.

Brown (2009) states that design thinking ‘requires empathy for the user’ (p. 3) and this is exactly what was felt when looking at not only the users needing space for their paper planes but also those users whose needs were breakaway spaces to read, space to catch up with friends and draw/ create artworks, space to play board games and create puppet shows. The identification of the opportunity to add another dimension to our library learning space for lunchtime was as Seidel and Fixson (2013) identify the more formal method of ‘needfinding’ (p. 20).  Together with the students we drew on the requirements for a novel concept and made the clear goal of designing a space that would keep everything needed in one area.

As outlined by Seidel & Fixson (2013), the ‘multidisciplinary team’ (students from Years 2 – 6) brainstormed possible solutions to our opportunity, the second formal method of design thinking and together we decided to build our ‘prototype’ and trial it for 2 weeks.  Linking this brainstorming to prototyping straight away led to an initial successful outcome and as Seidel & Fixson identify in their study once the decision was made as to which design concept we would go with we were able to push forward and focus on the practicalities of design.  At the end of 2 weeks, we will get together and identify if the space is still needed and if so, is it working (Seidel & Fixson, 2013).

As the manager of this learning space, it was my responsibility to guide the students to think creatively and have a ‘can do’ attitude rather than squash their enthusiasm (Kuratko, Goldsworthy & Hornsby, 2012).  The team needed to be proactive and ‘seek the peaceful co-existence of desirability, feasibility and viability'(Kuratko, Goldsworthy & Hornsby, 2012). I needed to be flexible and open-minded as we promote our library as having space for everyone.

This is the view coming into the entryway of the library.  The glass doors that can be seen open up into a secondary ‘spillover’ area called the Fishbowl.


This is the Fishbowl which is another area of redesign but this would involve negotiations and discussions with leadership.  At the moment though, the students can use this space to get on laptops to find YouTube clips on how to make paper planes and collaborate with each other.  the older students are enjoying mentoring the younger students in their endeavours and the circular tables are beneficial for this.



This space is where you can see the initial design but as Kuratko, Goldsworthy & Hornsby (2012) identify,  it is the ‘starting point’ and already within our 2 week trial period we have come up with ideas to display a poster showing what the target is for, a set of numbers to change the numbers that will be added together, adding books about flight and birds to assist students research further designs as in the movie and perhaps have different coloured papers so that students can identify their planes easily once they have flown them.

#INF530 In A Nutshell

In  the first post I wrote in this blog I referred to Douglas Thomas’ “A New Culture of Learning” and how he could identify four components of learning:
1. passion;
2. imagination;
3. constraint
4.  play.
These words really provide an ‘in a nutshell’ way of thinking.  I have found the learning in INF530 challenging and at times I was quite anxious about my own ability to keep up and contribute as I have connected with an exceptional cohort of partners in learning.  As I reflect what I have learnt over this first session I find that again I can fit my learning into these four components.
1.  Passion
I have rediscovered my passion for my role as teacher librarian and am now able to advocate for our school library environments when they say things like, “But aren’t you worried that you’ve taught yourself out of the classroom?  Libraries might not be needed when we have the Internet” and of course, “You’re so lucky!  I’d love to just read books and show kids how to find information.”  This is why I chose to finish with my digital essay, “Why Do We Need School Libraries?  We have technology” I have found my passion for my role as teacher librarian to be more relevant than ever.  I see my students at all different stages of abilities in their digital literacy and digital citizenship development. The idea of the just-in-time learner really challenged me as I thought it was just a phrase being thrown around as almost an  Navigating Web 2.0 is something that our students need us to guide them before we let them go on alone.  Then eventually the lightbulb lit up and I realised I am a ‘just-in-time’ learner as much as I am a  lifelong learner.  My passion is not learning content but learning how to learn not just teaching it but refining my own skills so that I can ‘walk the talk.’
2.  Imagination
My imagination is the what are the possibilities I can dream from here?  I have had my eyes opened wide to the possibilities of integrating even more technologies within the environment.  Knowing there is video conferencing capabilities in the school that I have never seen utilised.  Knowing that there is a 3-D printer that could be used by students to create some amazing products of their learning.
I am passionate about reimagining and designing our library to be both a formal setting for learning and an informal space for collaboration and networking.  Conole (2012) discusses the affordances of Web 2.0  as “fostering collaboration and for co-construction and sharing of knowledge but raise a number of issues of copyright and privacy” (p.56).  I am passionate about this idea of collaboration as I realise that learning is dialogue, it is building upon each other’s understandings, it is a collective activity and therefore it requires collaboration and participation to keep the dialogue going (Ravenscroft, Wegerif & Hartley, 2007).  On the other hand though it is important that we assist our students in understanding that there are ethical ways of using information and  develop a healthy skepticism about expertise (Walters, 2015).
Bring on the revolution indeed.  I imagine an education system that embraces differences, in opinion and ways of learning, that will create a global culture of understanding with many voices.  Perhaps it isn’t just the problem-solving, critical thinking skills but also empathy and tolerance that can grow by immersing ourselves and our students in the globalised network of learning.
3.  Constraint  
Oh, how this idea can have so many meanings.  Firstly, it can relate to the idea of not having time, budgets, devices, professional development.  Some consider these barriers but I continue to question, can we keep allowing ourselves the time not to adopt? not to spend? not to train?  Why are we continuing to put constraints on our students learning?
Digital technologies allow learning to happen anywhere, anytime and perhaps it is time we embrace IT  rather than trying to constrain what is expected by us – connectivity and the ability to participate (Conole, 2012).
4.  Play
This idea of play was complemented by my learning in INF541 Game-based Learning.  I had never thought deeply of games or participating with Web 2.0 as an extension of our own creativity.  Routledge (2009), stated “Games are not a replacement for teachers but they should enhance the teaching experience” (p.280).  What if we replaced the word games in this quote for Web 2.0 ?  Web 3.0?    One way I have ‘played’ this session is by starting to participate in Twitter and it has now become my preferred social media as it is access to experts of many fields, anytime, anywhere.  It has become my Professional & Personal) Learning Network.  I then thought and know that after this experience of learning and being the student, I have appreciated the opportunity to play.  I no longer see myself as a “lesser” because I am the student, I now recognise that even my teachers (lecturers) are learners too.
So, in a nutshell – it can’t be the end of this first session, I feel like I have just gotten started!

Learning Beyond Limits – Embrace IT!!

I remember hearing someone, somewhere, that when we are researching for our assessment tasks then we should only be choosing from educational databases or databases that have to do with our profession.  When I heard this I agreed to a certain extent but there was something that did not sit comfortably after all the reading we have been doing about connected learners, connectivism, the convergence of media, networked knowledge.  Also, being a teacher librarian, perhaps it was because while that is my professional identity, my personal learning  does not restrict me in going beyond the boundaries to open my eyes to new concepts and ideas that could keep me at the cutting edge of my professional learning, knowing and ability to share with others.

For example, in my GBL Chapter, I was able to draw links and make connections between digital literacy and how GBL allows the learner to practise those skills.  To get to this space, I needed to read a little bit from psychology, a little bit from cultural studies, a little bit from media and well, I think it can be seen that this is what learning looks like for everyone. It is “lifelong and lifewide” (O’Connell, 2014, p. 13; Erstad, 2013)  Mimi Ito outlines this fact of learning beyond the formal space of learning in the following YouTube clip.

While the changes needed to participate in a digitally, networked information ecology are challenging, I am now seeing them as positively challenging.  By this I mean, how lucky we are that we can move beyond our pigeon-holed identities and be recognised as learners.  I am so privileged to be able to ‘connect’ to my learning, even though my hardware breaks and some frustrations do happen as a result, ultimately, I always have an option to connect.  I don’t have to enrol in a Uni degree but I choose to so that I can be accountable for my learning and my knowledge sharing.  I want to add to the conversation from my experience and my learning and whether that be media, psychology, cultural studies, game-based learning, I want to know my learning has meant something.  Is this not giving education the value it deserves in our global context?  This is what formal education settings need to realise that learning happens beyond their formal settings but it is the social space of schools and Uni that refine our learning through the ability to dialogue with others who are pursuing the same commonality of learning.  Hmmm…Dialogic learning in fact!?! (Note to self, go back and read Anna Craft and Rupert Wegerif.)

When we allow students the same permission we allow ourselves to learn in informal spaces as well as formal settings we open up the possibilities.  We are learning beyond limits.  Leander, Phillips and Taylor (2010) use the idea of ‘classroom-as-container’ as a metaphor that limits the potential of learning and research.  I like this metaphor as it is the packaging learning as happening only in the classroom that is one of the biggest challenges I face in my role as teacher librarian, which still remains a very misunderstood role.  In the following clip, John Seely Brown explains the boundaries of learning has moved and compares GBL mentality as the way of learning in all areas of life.

They are bringing it from the context of the game to the real world.  Wouldn’t it be great if this transference of learning happened across all areas of curriculum.  This is where I think 21st Century libraries and teacher librarians are even more important as we have always moved learning beyond the classroom – we need to connect this fact for our students though by providing relevance and purpose to their learning (without limits!)

Welcome to the 21st Century???We are 15 years into this phenomenon called the 21st Century.  Let’s embrace what it has to offer and instead of limiting our students learning…….let the learning move beyond.  Embrace ITand all the affordances it brings. (How you read this might be a reflection of where you are at, it was a typo but when I reread, there was something crucial in there for me!
