As a classroom teacher for a number of years I believe I have a pretty good idea about the need and value of data related to student learning in the classroom. Although, I hadn’t considered how important collecting data might be in a library situation. On refection, collecting data in the library would not only support the students learning further and assist classroom teachers with their own planning but it would also provide interesting insights into how the library is used and what updates/changes could be made to make the library a more valuable learning hub for staff and students.
Thinking ahead to a future TL role I believe collecting data could come in many different forms. Exit passes/slips would be a major part in assessing student’s knowledge, skills learnt, how students would like to access resources and future wants/needs for the library. This form of data collection is easiest to implement across all areas of the school and for many different topic areas.
I also think I would really like to have data collect around engagement in the library from both students and staff. What do they like/dislike about the library? What resources are they accessing more frequently? Do they prefer physical of digital resources? How would they like to use the library? Even down to how would they like the library to look like. All these options would allow for the library to be ever changing and flexible in how students and staff engage with it.
This is defiantly a topic I would like to think on more deeply.
