So far I have found the many discussions on information literacy very interesting an surprisingly have found I am able to connect and resonate with many different definitions and approaches to information literacy.
One section that particularly resonated with me was from Module 5.2 – In formation literacy theories
“It is the TL who works collaboratively with teachers to ensure students learn how to learn and therefore, become lifelong learners.”
I think this really stuck with me as it is sometimes assumed that our students already know how to learn and how to interact within an information literacy environment as they have the idea that they are ‘digital natives’. This isn’t always the case. Most students are able to physically navigate the technologies but don’t know how to use the information they are discovering in the most appropriate ways for learning.
Abilock’s 2015 article sates that information literacy is a ‘problem-solving process”, and I think this is how we as TL’s should be approaching it. Allowing students to explore, question, recognise, locate and apply their findings will support their learning significantly.
