Evaluation of the activity
Objectives
To gain an incite in the use of Pressbooks to be able to develop information resources for academics in the writing and construction of electronic textbooks using the platform.
Reason for attendance
My motivations are mostly work-related in terms of seeking information that will assist me in guiding academic in writing their own textbooks for students. There is also a strong correlation with my studies in terms of demonstrating knowledge of developing interactive technology and information literacy assisting tools which are heavily mentioned throughout many of my courses.
Relationship to work or studies
I am currently part of a small team looking at implementing the Pressbook platform into the library to assist in the creation of free online textbooks which will allow greater accessibility options for students, relive financial stress from students and allow collaboration options for academics in terms of writing material for students both locally and internationally.
What the activity achieved in terms of my learning outcomes
I have been able to learn new skills in terms of using this new platform in creating and sharing textbooks with the relevant Creative Commons licence as well as learning how to use software such a Latex and Mathjax script to assist student to visually demonstrate mathematics in a browser environment.
Planned implementation from knowledge gained
I am currently working as part of a project team looking at ways to assist academics interested in the creation and writing of online textbooks for their students and the ease and collaborative advantages this platform will provide them. The information gained will allow me to not only utilise the platform confidently, but it will also allow me the opportunity to start creating an online guide to provide information to interested parties.
