Initial rough draft/thoughts
- Project Title Information & Data Security and the emerging threats to Computer Local Area Networking (LAN)
- Abstract: This project will look at the information and data security for local area computer networks. It will look at the new and emerging security threats to computer networks in current working environments. The protection, and security of data inside the networks and also data transfer between networks.
It will focus on the protection of sensitive information and data and what new threats and security concerns are being posed by external and internal entities. Looking at in particular the threats to the computer network posed by; Cyber activities, wireless networking, remote working operations, internet related issues adding software and hardware
This project will look at the countermeasures and protection for these emerging threats for networks that can/should be implemented by network managers and administrators.
- Background/Description:
My area of work involves small LANs, setting up PCs and laptops for engineering data analysis events. This involves connecting these hardware, and introducing new hardware and software. It also involves connecting to outside entities, via the internet and other LANS with other Australian and overseas engineering units.
Providing a secure networking environment is essential to this setup, especially when dealing with classified or nation sensitive classification.
Ensuring the data/ information is secure and as safe as possible from all outside and internal possible threats.
The use of wireless hardware and remote logins is also progressing so threats and opportunities in that area will be looked at and assessed.
- Project Aim
This project aims to be aware of the latest security threats/concerns/trends for data security impacting LANs. involving
- Wireless networks and
- mobile hardware
- software
- remote networking activities and
- data transfer
It aims to identify the resources required to locate/identify these new threats and
It also aims to find latest security countermeasures to combat these emerging security threats for computer networks.
- Project Problem Domain
Networking security threats are a constant area of concern for IT administrators. Whether they be External such as phishing, malware, spyware, DDoS, viruses and how they may be implemented by outside threats. Or Internal threats, either through malicious insiders or just lax security measures or carelessness. Any or all of these threats provide a source of danger for data security and confidentiality.
- Outcomes/Deliverables
The outcome of this project will be to provide analyses of the list of the new and emerging threats for IT LAN administrators to be aware of.
Also trends to look out for and a list of procedures and counter measures to ensure the security of data, networks, and any transmission of data within the connected networks.
And list any opportunities to be looked at via advanced networking and future technological trends.
