Module 3- Discussion 3.3
Share your ideas about the ways in which Principals can enable the role of the TL, and how TLs might enable the role of the Principal.
One of the major themes presented in many of the readings in this module is the need for teacher librarians to be part of the school community and make themselves visible to the staff and most importantly, the principal. One way of doing this is by referring to the school plan to understand how he/she can assist the principal in achieving the strategic directions listed and then developing ways to work towards it. This ensures that the teacher librarian’s efforts are aligned with those of the school, and specifically those of the principal.
A supportive principal can do wonders in empowering teacher librarians to carry out their roles and responsibilities to the best of their abilities. This can be done by allocating a budget to fund educational resources for the library. Additionally, a supportive principal can utilise school funding to employ an assistant to handle clerical duties, freeing up time for a teacher librarian to teach students and collaborate with staff.
