4 signs you have high emotional intelligence

“Emotional intelligence can mean the difference between behaving in a socially acceptable way and being considered to be way out of line.

While most people will have heard of emotional intelligence, not many people really know how to spot it – in themselves or in others, ” says Jose M. Mestre, Professor of Emotion and Motivation, Universidad de Cadiz. April 12, 2017.

  1. Whilst emotional intelligence can be straightforward to understand as a concept, it can be another story entirely for people to put the skills of EI into practice. EI has been a stable of leadership development programs for a while now, and I think that sometimes people will say ‘I know about EI, I’ve done that training’ but haven’t really taken it on board – coaching people to manage emotion and empathise with others can be more challenging than coaching other management skills. In some ways a good sign of emotional intelligence, is being able to identify others who don’t have well developed EI.

  2. I found this article a good read in the context of assessing my workplace and our current team capacity for emotional intelligence. Our team is fairly fast paced and quite reactionary and doesn’t spend any time on this valuable work developing our individual EI and team skills – I think this fact is evident in our current performance as a team and it has a long way to go! The first step will be convincing them the outcomes are worth the time investment!
    Thanks for sharing it Pete.

  3. Emotional intelligence or competency has been a key feature of the development programs I have provided to leaders in the various organisations I have worked for. Developing the desire to be interested in people and their needs and drivers can be a challenge for leaders who have a focus on the outputs and business performance. This is commonly where I spend a lot of my time coaching leaders (appointed ones) and future potentials.
