What are Group Assessments?

Group work involves students working collaboratively on set tasks, in or out of the classroom.

Group sizes can vary from pairs to large groups of students. This guide deals with small groups (pairs and small teams of three to six). While the focus is on the face-to-face environment, much of the content also applies to larger groups or the online context.

Task: Global Learning Groups

TASK: Use group work or collaborative assessment tasks where the teacher can strategically group students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.  Groupings can be achieved by simply instructing students to:

  • Work with someone they haven’t worked with before.
  • Gather according to birth month
  • Gather according to preference of learning style

Encourage reflective practice about collaborative works, explicitly incorporating into the task some assessment around reflection from each student about their experience in working with culturally diverse students.
