Digital Health and Wellness

Our health is important. As we spend more time online than ever, we need to be especially mindful of the effect this has on our health and wellbeing.

In terms of physical health, we nee to make sure we do not spend too much time sitting at a computer or device. We should also make sure workspaces are set up to be ergonomic and comfortable. In the classroom, this may look like some of the following ideas:

  • Have computers set up so students have to stand rather than sit.
  • Use supportive, ergonomic equipment, such as mouse pads, wrist rests, laptop stands, fully adjustable chairs (this is obviously not an easy goal to achieve, as it involves a fair bit of $$$)
  • Use other teaching strategies which don’t require computers or devices. This is important for eye health.

Psychologically, there are other health issues. It is very possible to become addicted to video games, the internet, or just technology generally. In a classroom setting, it is important to vary the teaching materials used on order to expose students to a range of learning experiences.
